Head teacher’s update
It has been an incredibly busy week at Church of the Ascension! Our week has included a Trust Choir Festival, 2 visits to the Black Country Museum, a gymnastics competition, Experience Easter at church, a football match and lots of learning!
Thank you all for your support with the new rubbish collection arrangements. The children have been fantastic in trying to make sure that they are putting things in the correct bins. It is taking some getting used to for us all, but we are very grateful to you and to the children for your continuing support.
Elevate Performance Academy sports coaches will be offering extra-curricular sporting activities for year 2- 4, after the Easter holidays. We have the following on offer:
Year 2 – cricket/ rounders on Tuesdays
Year 3 – cricket/ rounders on Thursdays
Year 4 – rugby on Wednesdays
Letters are available from the school office, should you wish your child to participate. There is a cost of £5 per session.
We are very much looking forward to the Church of the Ascension Spring Festival on May 16th. There are stalls still available – if anyone would like one, then please do get in touch with the school office. We are also looking for any talents that could perform on the evening, such as singing or dancing. Again, if you are able to offer or know of anyone who could, please contact the school office who will put you in touch with the HSA.
Collective worship
This week, we continued to focus on the Fruits of the Spirit. We thought about Gentleness and what this looks like in our daily lives. We also considered whether gentleness is strength or a weakness. The children gave some very thoughtful responses and were able to think of lots of examples of gentleness, from the Bible.

Recycling Legislation
Tuesday 1st April 2025
Dear Family
Re. Simpler Recycling Legislation
From next week there is a change in legislation which means that organisations such as school are required to sort more of their waste for recycling. Whilst I am sure that we all applaud this move, it coincides with Dudley Council, who used to collect our bins, withdrawing this service for schools and a delay before our new provider can begin.
As from the beginning of April, the school will need to have a number of bins for specific waste.

This is going to mean a change for pupils, staff and visitors. We have been advised that if bins are contaminated with the wrong waste, they may not be collected and if this is repeated, the school may be liable to a fine.
As a school, we have a lot to do to ensure that we are all fully educated about these changes. The children will be spoken to in lessons and in assemblies and posters will be displayed around school.
Due to the changes in our approaches to managing waste in school, from next week, all children bringing a lunchbox into school are required to bring their rubbish home, rather than being able to dispose of it in school.
We would welcome your support by talking to your child about these changes.
Yours sincerely
Mrs L Mason

The last Church Club of the term
We thoroughly enjoyed Church Club today – a snack of grapes, a video of part of the Easter Story and an Easter craft. The perfect end to Church Club for the Spring term – thank you as always to Sheila, Sian and the team. We’re looking forward to Church Club in the new term.

Trunk Theatre: Great Fire of London
Year 1 and 2
On Monday we had some very special visitors who taught us about The Great Fire of London. They were very impressed by how much we knew already! Victoria and Holly acted out the events of The Great Fire of London. They were very funny!

We sang ‘London’s Burning’ and we also did some dancing too.

We played a game where we had to work in teams to fetch water to put the fire out.

We joined in with some acting. We wiggled a sheet of fabric for the River Thames!

In this picture, volunteers are helping Samuel Pepys to find his cheese!
At the end we had to rebuild London after the fire. We did this by drawing pictures.

Another Egg-citing Experiment!
We have been thinking about about farm animals and their young.
We read ‘Rosie’s Walk’ (learning lots of new vocabulary) and watched a programme about how chickens grow. We learned that the eggs our families buy are special and don’t have baby chicks in them.
We talked about all the different types of eggs we have eaten and what they looked like when they were cooked.

We wanted to find out what was inside our egg and what happened when we heated it up. Mrs York tried to break the shell by squeezing it on the top and bottom, but it was stronger than we thought.

She managed to crack the shell by tapping the side of the egg onto a metal frying pan. We could see the yellow egg yolk and a clear jelly… it didn’t look like the eggs we eat!
Mrs York put some tea lights under a frying pan to make it hot and we waited to see what happened.

The clear jelly started to turn white!

What amazing things eggs are… I think it might be fried egg for tea tonight!
KS2 Choir at Elements’ Choir Day
EDLT Choir Day
On Wednesday, 53 children from our KS2 Choir travelled over to Christchurch, Coseley, to take part in a Trust-wide choir day. Each school was given the chance to perform to one another as well as learn new songs together.

Our choir performed ‘Waymaker’, ‘Do Re Mi’ (complete with actions) and ‘The Blessing’.

Well done to all of the children who represented our school so brilliantly. We are so proud of you and the fantastic singing that you produce!
