At Church of the Ascension CE Primary School, we believe that the learning of a foreign language prepares our pupils for participating and thriving as individuals in a rapidly changing world in which work and other activities are increasingly carried out in languages other than English. We believe that a high-quality languages education should foster our children’s natural curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world, whilst also providing them with a valuable social and cultural experience.
We aim to offer a curriculum that teaches and enables our children to confidently express their ideas and develop their communication skills through speaking, listening, reading and writing, with the opportunity to do so for practical purposes. As a school, we believe that learning another language gives our children a new and broader perspective of the world, encouraging them to think of cultures beyond their own. We also believe that an increased capability in the use of MFL promotes initiative and independent learning and encourages diversity within society. The opportunity to access ideas and experiences from a wide range of people, communities and cultures helps to embed our school’s core value of respect, and celebrates the inclusiveness, nurturing and supporting of all members of our community and beyond.
We aim for our children to view themselves as confident and capable linguists. Throughout their time with us, our children will develop skills that will enable them to begin to communicate effectively in another language, develop an appreciation of cultures beyond their own and become conscientious global citizens.
