Easter Craft Afternoon

Reception had a fantastic afternoon making Easter crafts with a special grown up.

The afternoon began with a fabulous Easter bonnet parade (we had some marvellous creations), followed by a selection of Easter songs.

The children then worked with their grown up to produce 4 different Easter crafts.

The children demonstrated their cutting, sticking, colouring, painting and biscuit making skills and were extremely well behaved. We were all very proud and had a wonderful afternoon of Easter celebrations.

Experience Easter for Reception led by Worship Leaders

A huge well done to our Worship Leaders in Years 5 and 6 for planning and organising an Easter Experience for our youngest children in Reception.  Each group told a part of the Easter story and planned some very creative activities including coin rubbing, plasticine and play people, sticks and even pin the tail on the donkey! Thank you so much to Reception who were so attentive and willing to try everything.  As always, thank you also to Sian, Father Chris and Mother Sarah at Church of Ascension for their time, guidance and enthusiasm!

Farmyard Fun

Today was such an exciting time for Reception ….it was our first school trip!  We visited Ash End House Farm.  The children had an amazing time learning all about baby animals and helped Farmer Jenny and Famer Sarah with all of their jobs.  Take a look at what we got up to.

Fun at Forest School

What a wonderful time Reception have had at our fabulous forest school!  The children were in their element, learning and exploring in the outdoors.  We heard so many children saying “Forest school is the best”.

The mud kitchen was a huge hit.

Thanks to our wonderful Forest School leader Fiona for facilitating such a magical time.

Another Egg-citing Experiment!

We have been thinking about about farm animals and their young.

We read ‘Rosie’s Walk’ (learning lots of new vocabulary) and watched a programme about how chickens grow. We learned that the eggs our families buy are special and don’t have baby chicks in them.

We talked about all the different types of eggs we have eaten and what they looked like when they were cooked.

We wanted to find out what was inside our egg and what happened when we heated it up. Mrs York tried to break the shell by squeezing it on the top and bottom, but it was stronger than we thought.

She managed to crack the shell by tapping the side of the egg onto a metal frying pan. We could see the yellow egg yolk and a clear jelly… it didn’t look like the eggs we eat!

Mrs York put some tea lights under a frying pan to make it hot and we waited to see what happened.

The clear jelly started to turn white!

What amazing things eggs are… I think it might be fried egg for tea tonight!

Space

Our space topic was ‘Out of this world!’

The last 2 weeks Reception have been learning all about space.  The children have become lunar experts, learning about the moon and moon phases.  They know all about our solar system and the sun.  They can talk about why we have day and night and loved learning about the first man on the moon.  They even made space themed mother’s day cards

Dinosaur Science Week…Roar!

The children have really enjoyed being scientists this week. They dressed in their lab coats, lanyards and goggles and were keen to complete some dinosaur experiments!

We began the week by measuring dinosaur food ready for some dinosaur hunting. Like all good scientists we were very careful when we recorded our results.

We investigated floating and sinking and tested whether we could make a toy dinosaur float.

We worked in teams to make a bridge over a swamp.  It had to be strong enough to hold a dinosaur for 30 seconds.  We only had scissors, tape and pieces of paper.  We learned that we could make strong cylinders and triangles from our paper.

We tested different materials to discover which one would keep our tiny dinosaurs dry.  We found out that the foil was waterproof.

Just like real scientists, we investigated dinosaur poop to find out what they ate.  We could tell if the dinosaur was a herbivore, carnivore or omnivore.  We made our very own pretend poop to trick our grown ups!

We sorted dinosaurs according to how many legs they walked on.  Most two legged dinosaurs were predators.  The small ones hunted in packs.

We all became palaeontologists and excavated a dinosaur skeleton!

We studied the Pterosaurs and made our own flying ‘Pipette-osaurus’!

Unfortunately, at the end of our dinosaur science week, we had a security breach! The dinosaurs from ‘Jurassic Park’ had escaped – one was filmed looking for food in Mrs York’s classroom!

But don’t panic! Mrs Hobson-o-saurus came to save the day and led us on a dinosaur hunt around school. Thankfully, we managed to find all of the missing dinosaurs.

We have had a fabulous time being scientists!

Reception Parents

As part of our World Book Day celebrations, we have ‘Book Wish List’ boxes in school where children can write the name and author of a book that they would like us to buy for their class book corner. Could we ask parents of Reception children if they would like to write these for their children and send them into school with them?

Thank you for your support.

World Book Day 2025

To celebrate World Book Day, all the children brought a book from home for our Reception book swap. They were very excited to see who chose the book that they brought in.

They all found a nook to read their book!

After lunch, we had a special visitor who came to read us one of their favourite stories. The children loved listening to Mrs Peters reading Hairy Maclary.

At the end of a fantastic day, each Reception class received a special gift… a new book!

Our School is Springing into Life!

Today we took the time to appreciate all the signs of new life around our school. The children were so inspired they created their own snowdrop artwork when they came back to the classroom.
