Welcome to Year 5 and 6

Years Five and Six

We would like to welcome you to Years Five and Six.

On this page you will find useful information about your child’s homework, weekly timetable, links to useful apps and other important information.

We want you to know that we are always happy to support you and your child in any way we can so if you have any concerns or worries, please don’t hesitate to contact us via email on info@chur-ascen.dudley.sch.uk.

Attendance

Attendance is extremely important so please ensure your child is here every day and they are lined up on the playground for 8.50am to be greeted by their teacher. Children finish school at 3:20pm.

Reading

We expect that children should be reading at home for at least 20 minutes each day. Children should be filling in their own planner and parents are asked to sign the planner each week. Reading records will be checked by staff weekly.

Our school uses Accelerated Reader to monitor our children’s reading progress. Children will select a book from the KS2 Library that is within their reading range. Children should take a quiz on Accelerated Reader before changing their book. This can be completed at home or in school but must be completed independently. Parent can monitor their child’s progress using the Accelerated Reader website.

Homework

All homework set will be based on work which has been covered during lessons. Children in Upper Key Stage 2 are expected to complete English and maths homework every week. In addition, research based projects will be set in other subjects such as geography and history when appropriate.

In order to further develop their skills, all children are expected to continue to practise their times tables regularly and are provided with a login to TTRockstars.

In year 5, English Homework is given out every Tuesday and should be returned by Friday. In addition, spellings are given out weekly on Mondays and are tested on the following Monday. Maths homework is given out every Friday and should be handed in on the following Tuesday.

In year 6, English and maths homework will be set online on Monday, due to be completed by Friday each week. A spelling test will be conducted weekly on Mondays. Children will also be allocated other reading and research based tasks occasionally.

PE

Children are expected to have both an indoor and an outdoor PE kit. Please refer to our school Uniform Policy for further information. This half term, PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday.

Water bottles

We encourage our children to stay hydrated throughout the day and welcome water bottles to be brought in. Please could you ensure that the bottle is labelled to avoid it getting misplaced.

Walking Home

Should you wish your child to walk home from school alone, please collect a permission form from the school office and return to school.

Mobile Phones

Children who are walking home alone from school, are allowed to bring their mobile phones. These must be switched off when they enter the school grounds and handed in to the class teacher. They will be given back at the end of the day.
